8th team meeting for Low Pressure LNG Tank and Bunker Storage Solutions

Representatives from the MariGreen Project consortium were welcomed to the Nordseewerke Emden Shipyard GmbH on the 18th December 2017 to hold the 8th team meeting for the sub-project ‘Low Pressure LNG Tank and Bunker Storage Solutions’.

Steady progress has been made recently within this highly innovative sub-project, whereby the goal is to design and build a form-free cryogenic tank that is capable of storing LNG at low pressure. The design was originally developed by ABH Ingenieur-Technik GmbH based in Emden. This new approach to LNG tank design is based on a double-walled, vacuum-insulated chamber which enables not only enormous strength and significant weight reductions, but also the capability to custom-build tanks to fit the precise contour of a ship or a pontoon, thus maximising loading space.

The Nordseewerke Emden Shipyard GmbH is a central partner within this sub-project, bringing extensive experience from their long heritage in heavy marine construction into new areas of cutting-edge technological innovation that will continue to shape the shipbuilding industry going forward.

This team meeting included a tour of the welding laboratory set up at Nordseewerke Emden Shipyard GmbH where the prototype tank is currently under construction. These images show the first walls of the inner tank being prepared. Meanwhile, materials for the outer tank are currently being ordered together with the valves and measuring components. These will be fitted in Q1 2017 prior to testing and validation.
